Why People Can Buy The Wrong Paper Shredder

Why People Can Buy The Wrong Paper Shredder

By: David Gowen

One of the fastest-growing crimes in the UK is Identity theft fraud. The Home Office estimates itÂ's now costing the country £1.7 billion a year, up from £1.3 billion in 2002. Despite the cost to individual victims often running into thousands of pounds, people still seem to be buying the wrong shredder for their needs.

I hope after giving you some background information on the real threat that you face from identity theft fraud you will appreciate my advice on how to avoid buying the wrong shredder. I have also put together a helpful Â"Shredder buyerÂ's guide toolÂ".

Identity fraud news stories appear almost every week, when a victim loses their identity it often includes losing their savings, homes or businesses to the criminals who have impersonated them, literally costing thousands of pounds.

The theft of your identity takes place when a criminal gets hold of enough personal and financial details to impersonate you. A common method is bin-raiding, when a stranger goes through your rubbish in search of discarded documents, like bank and credit card statements. Another problem is the mail being intercepted, personal documents, such as passports or cheque books, can simply be stolen before they ever reach you. Even though we are surrounded by this increased threat we still make it easy for the thief to achieve his goals.

The theft of these documents enables the criminals to start committing the identity fraud. They clone your personal details from your discarded letters, bank statements, application forms and utility bills to obtain money, goods or services in your name. This will often involve taking out loans and credit cards, or running up debts they have no intention of repaying.

Despite the huge growth in this crime a large number of people remain unprotected. There has been one solution that is continually recommended to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft fraud, paper shredders, with most news stories advising us to invest in a shredder.

The sales of shredders over the past five years have grown enormously; they are sold in a plethora of retailers from department stores to supermarkets. Whilst the sales of shredders have grown the prices have fallen dramatically.

My tips to avoid buying the wrong shredder:

1. The first item on your checklist is to decide what type of user you are?
Home User
Business User
Public Sector User

2. Next decide what type of environment will the shredder be used in most?
Home/Home office
Small Office - 1 - 5 users
Medium Office - 5+ Users
Large Office 10+ Users
Department 20+ Users
Shredding Facility – Industrial

3. The number of sheets you want to be able to shred in a single pass is a very important consideration? Remember the less sheet capacity a shredder has the longer it takes to shred your document.

For light home use a shredder capable of shredding over 6 sheets at a time should be a good starting point.

For a business shredder being used by more than five people I would recommend no less than a 10 sheet capacity.

4. Deciding the type of security you require will allow you to narrow the search for the right shredder. I have published a guide to the security levels available on shredders, use this to gain a greater understand of the options available to you.

5. Probably the most important thing to consider is your budget, now everyone likes to get a bargain when shopping but is a shredder a product where you should buy the cheapest? Consider what the shredder is doing for you? I like to think of my shredder as an insurance policy, I have never purchased the cheapest insurance policies and I ensure that I am protected from all risks.

Consider how much your identity is really worth; donÂ't always go for the cheapest shredder available when, for a few pounds more, you can probably get much better privacy protection. This is one area where saving money could actually cost you money.

A well known supermarket was recently selling a shredder for £7.00, now that is cheap! On closer inspection I noticed that it only cut a sheet of paper into strips that were 9mm wide! That would make it really easy to put back together as it is only 23 strips from a piece of A4 paper. One of the most popular shredders I know about for home use is the HSM X5, this reduces a piece of A4 paper into over 400 confetti type pieces! At under £35.00 I think this offers the home user Â"realÂ" value for money.

A cheap shredder will not stand the test of time and is also more likely to jam when in use. A paper jam in a shredder is another major threat to your security, imagine you are shredding some documents and you get half way through and you experience a paper jam, after several minutes reversing the paper it is all to easy to discard the half shredded material in a waste bin. If a bin raider discovers this in your rubbish it is like gold dust, they instantly recognise sensitive information and this sticks out like a sore thumb.

If you use a cheap, noisy and low cutting capacity machine it will undoubtedly lead to frustration and after time you will forget all about shredding as it is too much of a chore. If you but the right shredder first time you will actually save money.

In summary, spend time making your decision and donÂ't jump at the first shredder you see, it is all too easy to put one in your shopping trolley! If you want to save money donÂ't let your identity fall into the hands of the criminals

For further help on buying the right shredder first time, I have put together an Â"Shredder buyerÂ's guide toolÂ". It is simple, quick and will put forward a selection of shredders suitable for your individual needs.

The New Apple iPhone - Blessing or Curse?

The New Apple iPhone - Blessing or Curse?

By: Darlene Hull

In just a single weekend, Apple Inc. managed to sell over 500,000 units of its new Apple iPhone. The anticipation was huge, and while there were a few minor glitches - mostly resolved now - the general consensus is that they were worth waiting for.

The advance of this micro-technology in the form of cell phones, mp3 players, PDA's etc., is creating an amazing dependency on pocket-sized devices, and not just for the techies: stay-at- home-moms, children, even retired grandparents are jumping into the new trend with joyful - and addictive - abandon. We've come a long way, baby!

With all this advancement, however, there is still this minor niggle in the back of my brain that is forced to ask, "but is it really safe?" The verdict is still out on this one, with no one so far able to categorically say that this huge increase in brain and eye cancer is NOT related to cell-phone use; that this little hand-held device and the cell phone towers that power it are NOT causing an increase in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and that these are NOT the issue behind increased infertility, new learning disorders, mysterious illnesses, or even confused bees that can no longer find the hives they've just left.

This new technology behind the Apple iPhone will probably have little or no affect on the retired grandparents as the length of exposure is relatively short. However, young children who are growing up with this micro-technological dependency may well be exposing themselves to some very unpleasant risks. Professor Sir William Stewart, the chairman of the Radiation Protection Division of the Health Protection Agency, said: "I don't think we can put our hands on our hearts and say mobile phones are safe. If there are risks - and we think there may be risks - the people who are going to be most affected are children, and the younger the child, the greater the danger."

The cell-phone companies are assuring us that it's all very safe, to the point where they are now gearing their marketing to younger and younger generations of children, yet they are still putting clauses in their contracts absolving them of any responsibility should there really be issues. And there is also the fact that over sixty people in the medical profession world-wide believe the link between cell-phone use (and other forms of electromagnetic smog) and "mysterious illness" is a big enough risk that they have created the "Freiburger Appeal" requesting that certain precautions be put in place to protect ourselves as much as possible from the effects of the "new pollution" of these EMF's.

Personally, I love the convenience of these new gadgets and can't wait for the day when I, too, can afford the latest model of the Apple iPhone to replace my much used and much loved iPod. However, I hope that by that time someone has come along with the courage and funds to get to the bottom of the question of safety so that the only concern I'll have on that day is finding the time to listen to all the great stuff on my new device.

Photo Identification Cards Guarantee Security For The User

Photo Identification Cards Guarantee Security For The User

By: Jones Wright

The photo identification cards have become an essential part of normal everyday life. For most people an identification Card (ID cards) is an ID badge worn at work, this is not the case always, there exists a wide spectrum of ID cards applicable in different fields. From drivers license to transit passes used in busses, or even in credit cards, there are various types of photo ID cards designed to perform specific functions. However, every ID card has its own requirement in sync with the system in which it operates.

The photo ID cards can vary in shape, size, and functions depending on the type of requirement. Whether used for business or by an individual, the photo identification cards can bring about a considerable difference in the safety and efficiency of your security and identification system. The ID cards not only ensures safety of the holder, it can also save you in emergency situations as in case of an medical emergency the card would help people identify you and contact your family.

What is a Photo identification card?

Essentially a photo ID card is a standardized documentation meant for verifying different aspects of your identity. The card generally comprises of a permanent plastic laminate enclosing a photographically exposable film chip, which can be developed through a single processing fluid.

There is a core spacer in the laminate with a compartment for receiving the chip, having the spacer circumference virtually the entire edge perimeter of the chip. The transparent cover panels, which are fused to the spacer by plastic-to-plastic bonds, defend the chip and also allow exposure and display through the laminate. There are access ports that are projected from the exterior of the laminate, the compartment for delivering the processing fluid to the chip.

Typically, the photo identification cards contain information or database of the bearer including – the holders full name, a portrait photo, age, birth date, address, an identification number, profession or rank, restrictions, citizenship status, blood type and Rhesus factor. The new technologies have enabled ID cards with biometric information, like face, hand or iris measurements, photographs or fingerprints.

Things to consider for photo Identification cards:

In order to implement the identification system, the foremost requirement is to know the purpose of the system. For instance, when considering a person authorized to launch an atomic weapon, the required information would be very different from that required for a paid passenger of a train. So, the purpose of the card must be clear.

In some cases the card may serve more than one purpose. Consider a drivers license, it normally serves to prove driver's level of competency in driving. Surprisingly, today the driverÂ's license is mainly used as photo ID card. The next thing would be to implement the system. The purpose of the system would be to control the access over the system.

With basic information it is now possible to design the system. Photo on the card is imperative; the signature can probably be neglected, as there would be electronic means of verification. This is the case when security is the major cause of concern, however in some applications the cost might determine the type of identification system.

Considering the latest photo identification cards, which are the direct printed card, several companies have employed the latest system that allows taking a photo and printing it with any details directly on to the card. Such an arrangement not only offers higher quality card, it also generates full-proof security.

Nintendo Wii + Wii Sports - Good for fitness in children?

Nintendo Wii + Wii Sports - Good for fitness in children?

By: Karen Bennett

The Nintendo Wii it seems, puts pay to the concerns in recent years over the inactivity in children due to their interest in video games consoles. The Wii console really sets itself apart from the rest with its revolutionary motion sensitive controller, which actually requires movement in order to play the games.

The Nintendo Wii comes with the game Wii Sports, which includes tennis, baseball, bowling, golf and boxing. In tennis you will be swinging the remote as if it were a tennis racket and flicking it up to toss the ball into the air with a quick swing to serve. The other Wii Sports games work in a similar way simulating controller movements for like movements onscreen. Boxing however is the only Wii Sports game that uses the nunchuk attachment and is the most physically exhausting game of them all. In order to hit your opponent in the head or body, you will have to aim high or low with your swings.

There are three different activities with each game. In training mode, you will participate in random challenges, after which you will be assigned a fitness age, based on your performance. Sound familiar? The Nintendo DS game, Brain Training comes to mind...a physical version perhaps?

The important thing here is that gamers are becoming more physically active without even realising it - you could say it has a 'kill two birds with one stone' effect, combining video game play with physical activity. Given this 'physical' nature of the Wii, I wouldn't be suprised if parents rushed out to buy the Nintendo Wii just to get their kids off the sofa!

Another great thing about the Nintendo Wii is that it appeals not only to children and teens but to adults too, so its something the whole family can enjoy.

Could the Nintendo Wii revolutionize the way we play video games in the future? It will be interesting to see what Nintendo's competitors come up with next - this could be a tough one to beat!

Top Players In Digital Camera Market

Top Players In Digital Camera Market

By: Roberto Sedycias

Selecting a digital camera is definitely not an easy task with hundreds of brands available in the market. Before you decide to buy, you should take a look at the many features like optical quality, zoom, storage media and etc. These are only a few features among the many digital camera models to be compared. In terms of image quality, the amount of mega pixel resolution and the quality of the lens are the main factors that determine the sharpness of the pictures. And one of the best ways to know the quality and crispness of pictures is to see a printed picture.

As for image storage, there are many different kinds of storage media or flash memory cards available for digital cameras, which are rewritable chips that do not require power in order to retain the content. This makes it possible to take many photos without the fear of losing them before they are stored in CD-ROM or hard disk of the computer.

Surely, choosing a digital camera is not an easy task with so many models and range of mega pixels, features and different prices. Some of major brands available in the market are Argus, BenQ, Canon, Casio, Disney, Epson, Fujifilm, HP, JVC America, Kodak, Konica Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Polaroid, Ricoh, Samsung, Sanyo, Sony and Toshiba. However the most popular among them are Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, and Kodak.

Sony`s digital cameras are among the most innovative and popular in the industry. The cameras range from tiny 2 mega pixel point & shoots to bulky 8+ mega pixel units. Some of Sony digital cameras that are selling fast are Cybershot N2, Cybershot S700, and Cybershot T20.

Canon is also ruling the market with its amazing array of models. They receive high ratings from consumers because of their impressive construction and top quality images. Canon produces a wide variety of cameras, ranging from small point and shoot ELPH series to the professional range of SLRs. The most popular ones are Canon PowerShot A460, PowerShot A710 IS and PowerShot A640.

Nikon is not far behind in the consumer digital market where it is one of the major players. The Coolpix line of cameras with its impressive D-series SLRs has made a splash in the camera scene. Take a look at the fast selling ones: Nikon D40, Coolpix S50 and Coolpix L12.

Kodak digital cameras are known for their simplicity and quality. The easiest to operate when compared to its competitors. The one-touch image downloading, emailing, and printing features have made this brand even more popular in the market. Take a look at few of the models in the market: Kodak EasyShare V1003, EasyShare V803 and Easyshare C653.

Among the other major brands is the Olympus that offers innovative features like the 10x optical zoom on the Ultra Zoom models and the weather-proof body of the Stylus series. Some of the popular ones are Olympus Stylus 550UZ, Stylus 760 and Stylus 770 SW.

Before you start shopping for a digital camera, it will be helpful to know the lingo. Understand what the salespeople are talking about when they drop these digital camera terms - Borderless, CCD, Compact Flash, Digital Zoom, DPI, Firmware, F-stop, Image Format, Grayscale, LCD Screen, Mega pixel, Memory Card, Memory Stick, Optical Zoom, Secure Digital, SLR and xD Picture Card. So, to be on the safer side, it is better to have the knowledge of these terms so that you don`t get cheated.

There is so much that goes into buying a digital camera. Wrestle all the details under control with the various brochures provided by the manufacturers before deciding to buy one for yourself.
